When we celebrate St. Valentine's Day by giving flowers and cards to those we love, we do this in honor of Saint Valentine. But who was St Valentine....?

There are a couple of stories, but the primary legend says that Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century. The Emperor at that time was Claudius II and he noticed that single men made better soldiers than married men. He outlawed marriage for young men in the hope of building a stronger army. Fr. Valentine decided this decree wasn't fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions, he had him put to death.....In more recent times February has been the month to celebrate love, clear back to the Middle Ages.
